  1. Novell Labs certification Alliance Introduced
  2. SelfDCertification Program Benefits Hardware Developers

  4. PROVO, Utah -- February 4, 1992 -- Novell today announced the Novell Labs
  5. Certification Alliance.  Through this alliance, Novell Labs will train and
  6. authorize hardware developers to conduct NetWare compatability testing,
  7. allowing them to produce more NetWareDcompatible products and release them in
  8. a more timely fashion.

  10. "The Novell Labs Certification Alliance will allow NetWareDcompatability
  11. testing to become an intrinsic part of the product development cycle," said
  12. David Owen, vice president of Novell Labs. "As developers integrate
  13. compatibility testing into the development cycle, more products and
  14. configurations will be tested, and a broader base of NetWare certified
  15. products will be available to customers."

  17. The program has been developed in response to the increasing industry
  18. requirement for tested and approved hardware products.  To meet this need,
  19. Novell is enabling developers to certify products more quickly by
  20. incorporating NetWareDcompatibility testing into their development
  21. environment.

  23. The program, offered only to developers with whom Novell has an established
  24. relationship, consists of intensive training, dedication of developer
  25. personnel and equipment resources, use of and compliance with Novell test
  26. suites and guidelines and submission to audits.  Certification is still
  27. governed by Novell .  Products that meet certification requirements will be
  28. listed in the Independent Manufacturer Support Program (IMSP) index published
  29. by Novell.

  31. Program Structure

  33. In addition to establishing a test lab at their site, developers must send a
  34. minimum of two Certified NetWare Engineers (CNEs) to Novell for an intense
  35. twoDweek training course.  While in training, participants conduct extensive
  36. NetWareDcompatibility tests on their own products, sideDbyDside with Novell
  37. Labs engineers.  Novell provides test suites that must be used not only during
  38. the training but in subsequent tests at the developer site.

  40. Once training is completed, Novell conducts an audit on a minimum of five or
  41. more products tested by the developer.  After successfully establishing
  42. compliance, developers are authorized to conduct their own tests,  and are
  43. required to submit results to Novell to receive product certification and
  44. publication in the IMSP index.

  46. Program Quality Assurance

  48. Novell assures quality of testing and certification through several checks and
  49. balances built into the program.  Tests conducted by developers must be done
  50. in a testing lab that must be inspected and approved by Novell Labs engineers.
  51.  Test results are reported to Novell via an encrypted file that is
  52. automatically generated during the testing process.  If this file shows any
  53. signs of tampering, certification will not be granted.  In addition, Novell
  54. will conduct periodic audits by retesting products and comparing Novell's
  55. results agains results submitted by the developer.   Novell also maintains the
  56. right to publicly grant or rescind certification.  Certified products will be
  57. published in the IMSP index.

  59. Pricing and Availability

  61. The program, available now, is offered to a select number of developers who
  62. apply for participation through Novell Labs.  The cost is $35,000, U.S. and
  63. NonDU.S.  This represents a significant savings to developers who test more
  64. than five products per year.
